In 1994, the old became new when the “Floor on the Wall” was dedicated to the Austin Public Education Foundation.
Created of floor boards from Austin High’s original 1921 gymnasium, the “Floor on the Wall” was launched by the AHS Alumni & Friends Association. Its theme is “Preserving the Past and Planning the Future,” which reflects what the wall represents.
Part of the 1921 gym’s solid, maple floor was restored and now dominates a wall in Austin High’s south lobby between Packer and Ove Berven gyms as a lasting tribute to donors to the Austin Public Education Foundation’s endowment funds. Individuals and couples who give $250 or more and organizations and businesses that donate $500 or more are recognized with a customized plate on the wall.
Donors may choose to honor an individual, event or program associated with Austin Public Schools. The wall encompasses names of many people who fondly recall their school experiences and wish to help preserve the tradition of quality education for future Austin Public Schools students.
